A Tracy man died early Wednesday morning after his car jumped a curb and crashed into a fire hydrant along Dale Odell Drive in front of Hoyt Park.
The San Joaquin County Coroner’s office reported that Kirk Tafoya, 47, of Tracy, died in the crash. The coroner did not disclose the cause of death.
Traffic officer Steve Bailey said the man apparently had a medical condition that caused him to pass out as he headed north along Dale Odell Drive.
According to Tracy Police Department dispatch logs, a neighbor who heard the crash called police at 4:12 a.m. Fire and ambulance crews also were notified and arrived within a few minutes of the initial call.
Tafoya’s 1992 Mercury Cougar had knocked a fire hydrant off its base, crossed over the grass, sideswiped a tree and crashed into a playground structure. The driver was reported to be unconscious inside the car. He was taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
