While both Tracy’s Katelyn Golik and Amanda Torreto and West’s Ilah Estrada and Erika Sembrano left their respective league tournaments as runners-up, they didn’t leave without winning something — namely, an extension to their tennis seasons.
Today, the San Joaquin Athletic Association and Tri-City Athletic League runner-up doubles teams will join a field of the 16 best doubles teams from Merced to Sacramento in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Doubles Tournament at In-Shape Marina in Stockton.
“There’ll be some really good players from all over the section showing up,” Tracy coach Paul Demsher said. “I think the girls were excited to qualify and hope to do well.”
The two teams’ spot in the tournament won’t be known until 9 a.m. today, when coaches vote on player seeds. Play should begin about an hour later.
Both teams from both schools are comprised of singles players, but as their showing at the league tournaments two weeks ago proved, the transition to the doubles game isn’t impossible.
All players advanced as far as they could in their league singles tournaments before going to the doubles championship games. Estrada took home third place in TCAL singles, while Golik won the SJAA consolation title.
