Downtown Tracy may look like a scene out of the movie “Scream” this weekend as fearless kids and adults dress to scare for the annual Halloween parade.

And pets will get into the action, too.

Jeannie Duckworth, pet parade coordinator and owner of Decadent Pets, said she hopes to see 75 costumed pets scurry and scamper through town. Last year’s parade showcased a schnauzer as a scarecrow, a bulldog as a pimp and a turkey as a chef.

“It’s always funny to watch animals dressed up,” Duckworth said. “You just don’t see that every day.”

Pet costumes will be judged in three categories — funniest, scariest and best overall. Winners will receive gift certificates for downtown businesses. And the $10 entry fee for furry contestants will benefit the Tracy Animal Shelter.

Following the parade, kids can enjoy carnival rides and trick-or-treat at participating downtown businesses.

Carol Cauller, co-owner of Flower Pavilion, said she plans to buy nearly 500 pieces of candy to satisfy the trick-or-treaters that stop by her 10th Street shop.

“If the weather stays this nice, I suspect there to be a good turnout,” she said.

The Downtown Tracy Business Improvement Area sponsors the Halloween parade and trick-or-treating event.

“We did the wine stroll, which was our adult event, and now we’d like to host a family-oriented event in downtown,” DTBIA executive director Diana Koron said.
