EDITOR,

American Muslims have launched an effort to fund repairs of damaged Christian churches in the Middle East, and that is the right thing to do.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has presented a $5,000 check to the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg as seed money for a campaign to fund the repair of churches damaged by violence in reaction to Pope Benedict’s XVI comments. This American-Muslim grassroots campaign hopes to take the effort worldwide.

Islamic teachings require Muslims to respect and protect religious institutions, not harm them. A prime example is the existence of the Vatican of Eastern Orthodox in Istanbul, Turkey. During medieval times, nowhere else could the patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church find protection.

I am glad to see the efforts by CAIR and other organizations.

Riaz Hasan, Tracy
