For the Tracy Buccaneers, it’s time.

Tracy’s National Youth Football League team opens its 2006 season today with a battery of games in Lodi against the Junior Flames.

All four levels will play today, beginning with the Start division at 1 p.m., and culminating with the Varsity at 7 p.m.

The Buccaneers are already on the right foot after last weekend’s successful jamboree. All four levels recorded wins in their round-robin games.

Two levels will look to repeat last year’s remarkable success — but under different names. Last year’s undefeated Rookies were Super Bowl champions, but the majority of the team — along with coach Bruce Russell — has moved up to JV. New coach Rob Pane will seek to add a third consecutive Super Bowl title to the Rookies’ resumes.

The Starts, under coach Cliff Mills, won the Friendship Bowl last season. Scores aren’t kept at the Starts level until the playoffs.

Varsity coach Dennis Alegre, last year’s JV coach, said he’s excited for the season to begin.

“We have an excellent backfield, and hopefully that will play out good for us,” he said. “I think if we play tough, we’ll win a lot of football games.”

• The Tracy Raiders and Tracy Cougars both jamboree this weekend before opening play in the Delta Youth Football League during Labor Day weekend.

The Raiders will open their season in Stockton against the Bengals, while the Cougars will travel over the Altamont Pass to Pleasanton to play the Falcons.
