Three Tracy Level 4 gymnasts traveled to the Judges Cup at California State University, Sacramento, on Saturday, and two competitors finished in the top 10.

Shaylyn Gray and Eishlee Jasa, both 9-year-olds on the Classic Gymnastics team, finished with identical scores of 32.675, good enough to tie for ninth place out of 41 gymnasts in their division. Shaylyn’s score of 8.575 on the beam was good for first in that category. Eishlee’s 9.00 on the vault was the fourth-place score.

Elizabeth Higa, 10, scored an 8.05 in the vault event, which was good for fourth place in her 13-girl division. Her final score was 32.425.

The Judges Cup was an invitational meet presented by USA Gymnastics of Northern California, and over 700 gymnasts from all over the state attended.

Tornadoes hit Salt Lake City

The Tracy Tornadoes roller hockey team placed third in the midget division at the National Hardball Roller Hockey Championships, which were in Salt Lake City from July 8 to 15.

In their last game, the 12-and-under Tornadoes lost to a team from Cumberland, Md., and finished third. Ian Hutton of Jefferson School provided offense, and goalie Andrew Hutton kept the team alive in overtime and was named the tournament’s outstanding goalie.

Coaches Will, John and Linda McNeel pledge the team will be ready for next year’s Championships, which will be in Arkansas.

HIGH SCHOOLS

Boys Soccer

Atwater 4, Tracy 3

In its first serious preseason match, the Tracy High boys soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead but later relinquished it to host Atwater.

Danny Bourassa had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs (0-1), and Eric Valencia and Nizar Basma both scored goals. Juan Lopez added an assist.

Goalie Bobby Ebert stopped six shots.

Coach Phil Kalis said the team exceeded his expectations in the game.

“I was worried about us creating scoring chances, and we had lots and lots (today),” he said. “The result was really good — Atwater is a strong team. We have a lot to build on.”

Tracy will face West on Monday.
