EDITOR,
Mickey McGuire implies in his Saturday Town Crier column that the religious right’s certainty about its moral precepts were the greatest dangers to our liberties. I like to know which ones.
We believe that God is no respecter of persons. This means we believe in the rule of law and equality before the law. We believe, like Jesus, that to be the greatest of all, we must be the servant of all. This means that when I teach, the well-being of my students comes before my self-interest. We believe that no person should be convicted on hearsay evidence, just as the Bible teaches. That is innocent until proven guilty.
We believe in man’s tendency toward evil, so we believe in limited government and the separation of powers to keep people from having too much power.
We believe in not commenting adultery. That means my wife of 31 years does not have to question my commitment.
We believe in the sanctity of human life, which means all life is priceless and should not be forfeited without due process. We don’t believe we should lie or steal and should live a life of integrity.
Which of these should I doubt to be more virtuous
Scott Hurban, Tracy
