Answering phone calls from angry, concerned citizens can be nerve-racking, but Samantha Adhikari, 21, intern of Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, takes it in stride.

She has been tackling this as well as clerical work and giving tours of the U.S. Capitol during her summer stint in Washington, D.C.

“I love it here,” Adhikari said. “It’s a great work environment. We get to sit in on congressional hearings and hear some pretty heated debates.”

Adhikari received the unpaid internship through her college, University of California, Irvine, where she will be a senior majoring in political science starting in September. She said her ultimate goal after college is to attend law school, but she might join the Peace Corps or work in McNerney’s office on his staff in Pleasanton before that.

Adhikari graduated from West High School in 2005.
