10 years ago — 1998

Fire investigators are inspecting the embers of the Tracy Plunge after a fire destroyed the abandoned swimming pool’s wooden buildings on Holly Drive. A teenager is a suspect in the arson probe.

Republican Richard Pombo has won a new two-year term in the House of Representative, easily defeating Democratic challenger Robert Figueroa. Pombo was first elected in 1992.

Charlie and Donna Pikas threw out the first balls to open the Tracy Little League season. Both have been strong backers of the program.

Chris Young is the valedictorian and Jill Warapius is the salutatorian of West High’s Class of 1998.

The Tracy City Council has approved development of a skate park in El Pescadero Park in northern Tracy.



25 years ago — 1983


A proposition to levy a fire tax in the Tracy Rural Fire District has fallen three votes short of the required two-thirds majority for passage.

Waldo Stevens, an avid collector of historic Tracy photographs and memorabilia, has died at the age of 75.

More than 500 people have applied for the job of being Chuck E. Cheese at the new Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time Theatre on Clover Road.

Diplomas were awarded to 308 Tracy High seniors at the school’s annual graduation ceremony at Peter B. Kyne Field.

Steve Moreland, new pro at Tracy Golf & Country Club, has qualified to play in the U.S. Open by finishing among the leaders in a qualifying tournament at San Diego.



50 years ago — 1958


Attorney Alfred Souza was 11 votes short of securing a majority of votes for judge of the Tracy Judicial District. He will face trucker Arthur Affonso in a November runoff.

Donald Stocking, a 1954 graduate of Tracy High, has earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

City officials are studying a proposal from planning consultant Lawrence Livingston Jr. to establish a rehabilitation plan for the downtown business district.

75 years ago — 1933

John Hurley, a native of San Francisco and graduate of Washington State University, has been named the new football coach at Tracy High. Hurley was a standout football player in college and played a year of professional football with the Cleveland Indians. He coached a year at Orland. (Army Maj. John Hurley was killed in action in Italy during World War II.)

A Stockton man was killed in a knife fight that broke out in King Alley on Tracy’s Southside.
