Local grad joins CHP

Matthew Overby, son of Gary and Jennifer Overby of Tracy, graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in Sacramento on June 15, 2007.

Officer Overby is a graduate of St. Bernard’s Catholic School, Central Catholic High School in Modesto and the University of South Dakota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2005.

Before being accepted into the CHP academy in December 2006, Overby was a substitute teacher for both St. Bernard’s and the Tracy Unified School District. He will work in the CHP Golden Gate Division’s Santa Rosa office.

West junior earns national honor

The National Society of High School Scholars has honored West High School student Sterling B. Grande with an offer of membership. This national honor is an award that is presented to students who take honors classes. Grande has a 4.0 grade-point average, and will begin his junior year in August.

The National Society of High School Scholars was founded in 2002, and identifies academic excellence at the high school level.
