These days, you can find almost anything at a garage sale. Trash turns to treasure as quickly as folks can get out their change purses.

Dan and Vicki Frate proudly displayed a 100-pound rubber band ball at their Tracy garage sale last weekend.

Dan Frate accumulated thousands of rubber bands while he worked at Earth Grains Bakery in Oakland. Frate, who now works as a graphic designer from his Tracy home, calls the rubber band ball his “ball and chain.”

“I put about 11½ years of life into that ball,” Frate said. “The bakery is a very brutal job. It’s time to move on.”

The ball sold to the Frates’ neighbor for $20.

“It was like watching an old friend leave,” Frate said.
