10 years ago — 1996

The San Joaquin County Local Agency Formation Commission has approved annexation of the proposed Gold Rush City — about 7,000 acres in Stewart Tract — to Lathrop, a major step toward development.

Fabian Ray Lewis has been held to answer on 17 burglary counts in Tracy. He is the suspected “West Side Burglar.”

Plans have been approved to build a $1 million prisoner-transportation hub at Deuel Vocational Institution, according to Warden Edward S. Alameida Jr.

Byron Alvarez of RE/MAX real estate is selling a four-bedroom home on a corner lot for $142,900.

A year after it opened, the West Valley Mall is on target in attracting customers to its growing number of retail stores, reported to General Growth officials.

25 years ago — 1981

Kmart has pulled out of talks to locate a store in the McKinley Village shopping center. The firm will look for other sites in Tracy.

Former Tracy High and Colorado running back Lyndell Hawkins has completed a year with the Sacramento Buffaloes of the California Football League.

The Owens-Illinois corrugated-box plant in south Tracy will add 150 jobs with the closing of the O-I box plant in Hayward. (The plant later was acquired by Inland Container.)

Denny Del Nero, 71, retired petroleum delivery-truck driver, has died. For years, he worked at Banta Signal Oil and played for the firm’s softball team. As a young man he was a successful welterweight boxer.

A second-half explosion propelled the Tracy High Bulldogs to their fourth-straight San Joaquin Athletic Association victory, a 28-6 win against Lincoln High of Stockton. Raymond Silva scored twice for Tracy.

50 years go — 1956

Elizabeth Gawain, 35, of Palo Alto, has been named the city of Tracy’s first planning director. She recently completed a master plan for the development of Fremont.

Merrill F. West, Tracy-area farmer, has been re-elected president of the San Joaquin Farm Bureau Federation.

Funeral services have been held for Vernon J. Reeve, a local dairyman and farmer. He was active in the First Methodist Church.

Passes from quarterback Ron Bolin to end Alex Miller propelled the Tracy High Bulldogs to a 20-6 Valley Oak League win over Oakdale.

75 years ago — 1931

The Tracy Community Council has been registering families of unemployed workers to organize relief efforts.

George Hench, a 1930 graduate of Tracy High, is playing end for the College of the Pacific Tigers in Stockton.

Hoot Gibson is starring in “Clearing the Range” at the Grand Theatre on Central Avenue.

Five Tracy-area dairies will be visited during the annual San Joaquin County Dairy Tour.
