The school administrators and Tracy Unified School District officials would not give a reason for Anastasio’s departure from the job.
District spokeswoman Jessica Cardoza said that personnel issues are not subject to public disclosure.
Anastasio said on Monday, Jan. 28, that his contract had expired and that it would not be renewed by the district.
“They just decided to go in a different direction,” he said. “I would have loved to be here. I enjoy working with the kids.”
Anastasio declined to comment further.
He will continue in his role as a physical education teacher at Kimball High.
Coaches are paid a $6,169.69 stipend per year in addition to their teaching salary.
Kimball High athletic director Steve Thornton said that the district’s human resources division began advertising for the open position on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and will take applications for two weeks.
Thornton said priority goes to applicants already working for the school district.
“I anticipate there will be some interest in the district,” he said. “If not we’ll open it to the outside.”
Once applications are collected, the district will form an interview committee to screen applicants, set up interviews and make a recommendation to the human resources department and TUSD board of trustees, which decide the final hire.
Anastasio became Kimball’s head football coach in 2010 — the school’s first year of varsity football — after 12 years as the West High sophomore football coach.
His record at Kimball was 8-22, including a 5-5 record in 2012 which was just short of making the playoffs.
Anastasio was hired in 1988 by TUSD and has also served as West High’s varsity baseball coach from 1999 to 2006 and varsity softball coach from 2007 to 2012.

Kimball High football went from a startup to having a winning season in three years - that proves Anastasio is a good coach...so why take a new direction? I think the players and parents deserve an answer.
I've heard Kimball is plagued with poor leadership, especially in the front office. Sounds like they made yet another poor decision. I hope Anastasio finds a new home in the district....perhaps he can help turn around West High's football program?
1. Kimball had the best football talent in town this year. They should have never lost to Tracy High this year. The HC at Tracy High knew that and was happy to out coach Anastasio this years. If Loggins was at Kimball, they would have gone 9-1. He is the best coach in Tracy. West had no talent for him to work with. They were small and slow. 5-5 is not a winning season.
2. The players lack of discipline comes from the example set by their coach. QB and another player got suspended doing an immature prank. HC tried a couple of times to get other players out of trouble for cheating on exams.
3. The Kimball administration is the best in town. The Principal and Vice Principals set high standards. They do not let anyone get away with monkey business. They hold people accountable and do what's right. Kimball's test scores and standards are the highest in Tracy right now.
4. To bad about Rob and Steve Wichman. They are good coaches. Sometimes the baby gets thrown out with the bath water. They will bounce back. All the good people do.
5. I am sure Anastasio is a great guy but his hire was questioned 3 years ago. Those naysayers were right.
