According to the Sac-Joaquin Section basketball power ratings, Tracy High’s girls (14-9, 5-2 San Joaquin Athletic Association) are ranked 11th out of 35 teams in Division II, and Kimball High’s girls (14-7, 5-3 Valley Oak League) are ranked 13th in Division II.
West High’s boys (17-6, 4-2 Tri-City Athletic League) are ranked 13th in the 34-team SJS Division I.
Divisions I to IV will take the top-16 teams for the playoffs, which begins on Feb. 19 for the girls and Feb. 20 for the boys.
Two teams still on the outside looking in are the boys basketball squads of Delta Charter and Millennium high schools. They could make the 12-team Division V playoff bracket if each team wins most of their remaining games.
Delta Charter (8-7, 7-1 Mountain Valley League) is ranked 13th out of 26 teams while Millennium (12-9, 2-2 Central California Athletic Alliance) is ranked 14th in Division V.
The section’s formula for power ratings considers overall record, with an emphasis on league record and league strength.
Delta Charter’s boys, for example, are in second place in their league, but have a low league strength rating, 3.3 on a scale of 0 to 8, in a division where most teams have a league strength rating of 4.3 or better. That puts them outside of the playoffs if the postseason began today.
Teams will also get a chance to make playoffs this year if they win 15 or more games. Those teams will play in out-bracket games on Feb. 15.
Among other local girls teams, West (10-13, 1-5 TCAL) is 29th in Division I, Delta Charter (1-9, 1-4 MVL) is 19th in Division V, and Millennium (5-11, 0-4 CCAA) is 20th in Division V.
Kimball’s boys (11-11, 3-6 VOL) are ranked 27th in the 36-team Division II, and Tracy (6-15, 2-4 SJAA) is ranked 29th.
