Last week’s Remember When “mystery photo,” below left, relived one of the great moments in Tracy High basketball history.

It was on Feb. 21, 1975, that Bulldog standout Tom Snyder leaped into the air after sinking a near-half-court shot at the final buzzer to give Tracy a 40-38 win over archrival Stagg of Stockton. Snyder was joined in the celebration by teammate Steve Trevino.

Press sports editor Larry Minner reported that “bedlam reigned” as many of the 1,600 fans who filled the Tracy High gym swarmed onto the court. Snyder was lifted into the air by fans and carried off the floor.

Snyder, a 6-foot, 6½-inch redhead known by some as “The Towering Inferno,” went on to play for the St. Mary’s College Gaels and professionally in France. Many Tracy sports fans consider him the best basketball player to come out of Tracy High. Snyder married in France and continues to live there as a teacher of English.

A number of Tracyites, including Trevino, recall Snyder’s last-second shot. Among them are teammate Jim Enos, Carolyn Arnaudo,Tim Lopez, Liz Dean White, Donna Taveras, Greg Jimenez, Matt Palomino, Bob Edwards, Armando Garcia, Frank Grande Jr., Greg Cose, Keith Watkins, Dolan Henson and Jerry Yerian.
