I grew up in Tracy in the 1950s and 60s, and I can remember the Tracy Press being published on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The population then was only about 15,000 or so. The population now is, I believe, around 80,000. I find it hard to believe that there are not enough newsworthy events happening in Tracy to support the Press for more than just one day of publication.
It is mostly of local events and news, but it could include some area, national and even world news. For me to keep up on the news, I had subscribed to the Stockton Record, but the price of that subscription became unaffordable. Also, I leave my house for work at 5 a.m., and the Record would not be delivered by that time, so I canceled my subscription.
I believe that the Press would be fair in its subscription fee. I also know that in today’s Internet world, I can keep up on all news and events on the Internet or television — but call me old-fashioned or whatever, I still enjoy sitting down with a cup of Joe and reading the paper before I go off to work.
The people of Tracy deserve more than just a one-day-a-week newspaper.
The way papers used to make their money is not from the subsriptions, but from the ads - both classified and regular. Classified ads are gone pretty much, Craigs List and Ebay have killed them.
I am like you, “old fashioned” and enjoy sitting down with the newspaper. I subscribe to two dailies. But in today’s digital world, newspaper subscribers are fleeing in droves, and unless something draconian changes, you will see newspapers continue to contract, not expand.
