The girls basketball teams from Brookside Christian and Patterson high schools will play for the championship of the 2012 Tom Hawkins/Tracy Breakfast Lions Girls Basketball Tournament.

Brookside advanced to the game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tracy High after defeating the host Bulldogs 78-15 on Friday, Dec. 28.

Tracy High will play Gregori High of Modesto for third place at 6 p.m. at Tracy High.

Brookside Christian 78, Tracy 15

Brookside put its relentless press to work against Tracy High’s girls, shutting down the Bulldogs’ offense from the start.

Brookside (10-2) built a 22-0 lead before Tracy (8-6) got on the scoreboard seven minutes into the first quarter with a free throw from senior guard Toni Juarez.

The visitors kept up their full-court press for the first half, and Tracy didn’t score any shots from the floor until five minutes into the second quarter, when the Bulldogs charged through the Brookside defense and senior forward Angela Mariani made a shot. Senior guard Karsi Fyfe followed it up with another shot from the floor.

Even after Brookside eased off the full-court press in the second half, the Knights kept up their fast-paced game and continued to force turnovers.

Fyfe scored again on a 3-point shot in the third quarter, and Juarez charged through the Brookside defense for a shot in the fourth. Tracy went six for 15 from the free-throw line.

Brookside’s offensive leader was sophomore Ra’kyra Gabriel with 18 points. Junior Tiara Tucker added 15 for the Knights, and freshman Mi’cole Cayton scored 12.

Patterson 49, Gregori 45

Patterson won its semifinal game Friday with a late fourth-quarter surge against previously undefeated Gregori.

The teams were tied 32-32 at the end of the third quarter and continued to play a close game until Patterson junior guard Jovanah Arrington hit a 3-point shot to put the Tigers (11-1) ahead 44-42 with two minutes left in the game.

Junior center Mele Tupouata pushed her team further ahead of Gregori (11-1) with a field goal and a series of free throws.

El Camino 59, West 51

The Wolf Pack had a 20-18 lead midway through the second quarter when the Eagles caught up and started to pull ahead.

West (8-7) trailed 25-22 at the half, and the Eagles (6-9) gained momentum in the third quarter on two 3-point shots for sophomore forward Madalyn Bates.

West continued to get solid offensive contributions from sophomore Kate Bell and senior Emma Bell, with 16 and 15 points respectively, and junior Nini Woodward, who contributed 11 points.

West’s fouls were costly, however, as the Eagles made 14 of 18 free throws, mostly in the second half.
