Results from the 2000 U.S. Census show the percentage of Hispanic residents in Tracy has climbed from 26 percent in 1990 to 31 percent in 2000.

A last-minute “hook and ladder” play gave the Edison Vikings a 21-17 win over the West High Wolf Pack at Stockton. West’s Justin Huey scored on a 55-yard punt return.

The Jefferson School District has dedicated Tom Hawkins School. The retired district superintendent, for whom the school was named, was on hand during the program.

Midge Carroll, 50, has become the first woman warden at Deuel Vocational Institution east of Tracy.

After 12 years, Tracy High is getting out of the house-building business. Low prices for houses constructed by students is the reason, said school officials.

The George Clever Planetarium on the San Joaquin Delta College campus in Stockton has been officially opened. Clever, a retired Delta trustee from Tracy, took part in the dedication.



50 years ago — 1962

Tracy High has been forced to borrow $100,000 from the county to pay its bills until tax revenue arrives next spring.

William D. “Bill” Coats, 30, a deputy district attorney, has joined the Tracy law firm of Wadsworth & Souza. He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and Hastings School of Law in San Francisco.

More than 12,000 people swallowed polio-immunization sugar cubes during a polio clinic in Tracy.

The Tracy High Bulldogs downed the Sonora Wildcats, 20-6, on Peter B. Kyne Field. Alvin Correia caught a Paul Fiack pass to start the Tracy scoring.

Velma Leal and Ida Kaiser brought home trophies from women’s golf competition at Diablo Golf and Country Club near Danville.



75 years ago — 1937

Directors of the Tracy Chamber of Commerce have gone on record asking the Southern Pacific to build a new depot in Tracy. The present depot was described as old and inadequate for present needs.

Organization of the recently established Tracy Planning Commission is under way, but not yet completed.

Harris Fine of Tracy is a lineman for the freshman football team at the College of the Pacific in Stockton.



100 years ago — 1912

Water has been turned into the canals of the Naglee Burk Tract northwest of town, signaling the dawn of irrigation in the Tracy area.

The Tracy and West San Joaquin Board of Trade has asked the county to build a new road to bring traffic from the east into town with delays.

Tom Eagan has been promoted from assistant fire chief to chief with the departure of Charley Goodwin.
