MOUNTAIN HOUSE — Crews will break ground for a new preschool facility at Questa School on Monday, Oct. 8, according to Lammersville Unified School District officials.

Superintendent Dale Hansen said he is “pretty excited” to add preschool classes at Questa.

“There’s a huge need for 3- to 5-year-old services,” Hansen said. “The rooms will fill up fast (with students).”

Hansen said the site will have two modular buildings, each containing two classrooms with a kitchen and four bathrooms, to house about 24 students in each classroom.

Nichols Melburg & Rossetto of Redding is designing both the preschool and the future Mountain House high school.

According to Wesley King, a senior architect at the firm, workers will break ground Monday to dig utility trenches, and foundations for the modular buildings will be set in the beginning of November.

He said the buildings are being fabricated at the factory, and both are expected to be delivered and installed Dec. 10.

Each preschool building consists of seven 10-foot-wide pieces that will be put together at the site to create 30-foot-by-70-foot buildings, King said. Each building is going to be placed on school property at a designated gravel area near the adjacent park soccer field. A preschool playground will be built after the buildings are erected, he said.

The overall cost is $1,310,730, King said, $776,930 for the buildings and $533,800 for the site.

District officials say the preschool has been in the works for two years.

“I think it’s a good project, something that Lammersville School District and Mountain House can really benefit from,” said school board member David Pombo. “There’s a lot of working families in Mountain House that need someplace to send their kids — their options in Mountain House are somewhat limited. We had one at Wicklund (School), and our vision is to have a preschool at every campus.”

Fellow school board member Ben Fobert said that as a father of six children, he knows the challenge of finding a good preschool.

“A lot of families have two parents who work and it’s really hard to get kids in preschool and day-care programs,” he said. “(It will) offer special-educational services in the district that is needed in the community as it grows — getting a lot of young families.”

The preschool is slated for completion Jan. 25.
