A cardboard community sprang up for the night at St. Bernard’s Catholic School as dozens of kids spent the night in boxes to raise funds for the McHenry House Family Shelter during the 13th annual Kids in a Box fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 21.

Boxes of all shapes and sizes from a horse and chariot to the ocean liner Titanic filled the grounds as 109 kids slept overnight in the cardboard encampment.

The kids raised a minimum of $50 each for their overnight stay with a total of $8,038 being raised for the non-profit that helps families with emergency housing assistance.

Judges picked three boxes as the top designs and winning the prizes were the Titanic box, a chariot being drawn by the mythical horse Pegasus and a camouflaged tank.

Chaperones stayed with the kids through the night and the event ended Saturday morning.
