The fiesta at McDonald Park drew several hundred people. It was sponsored by the South Side Community Organization and preceded by a parade on Central Avenue. Former astronaut Jose Hernandez — who is running to represent Tracy in Congress against Rep. Jeff Denham — was parade marshal. Music was provided by the Tracy High Band.
At the park, Miss Tracy Latina Princess Erica Santiago and Miss Tracy Latina Angela Alvarez were crowned. “El Grito,” the call to arms that started the Mexican revolution for independence in Spain in 1810, was recited.
Folkorico dancers, food, handball and art were also featured.
At Lincoln Park, the holiday was celebrated with music, food, dancing and a talk outlining the history of Mexican independence from Spain.
