Born April 18, 1939, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, Mrs. Schmidt attended local schools and graduated from Tracy High School in 1957. She worked five years as a secretary at the H.J. Heinz Co. cannery, and she was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women’s Ministry League and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Tracy Post 1537.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Herbert Allen Schmidt of Tracy; a daughter, Vicki Lynn Castro, and her husband, Larry, of Lathrop; five siblings, Judith Rae Champaux, and her husband, Daniel, of Sonora, Janelle Grace Cowan, and her husband, Nick, of Searcy, Ark., Ronald Gene Kirchgatter, and his wife, Peaches, of Columbia, Rollo Wayne Kirchgatter of Judsonia, Ark., and Larry Dean Kirchgatter, and his wife, Nancy, of Ferndale, Wash.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were a brother, Jerry Lee Kirchgatter, and a daughter, Tanya Ann Schmidt.
A celebration of Mrs. Schmidt’s life is planned to begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 25, a Saturday, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1635 Chester Drive. A reception will follow in the church’s Life Center. Burial will be private in Tracy Cemetery. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., will handle arrangements.
