Kaitlen’s brightly colored quilt, which shows a series of cats in various comic poses, took the top prize among five youth entries in Chester Piecemakers Quilt Guild’s show, “The Quilts of Lake Almanor,” which was Aug. 4 and 5 in Chester.
The homeschooled 12-year-old, whose nickname is “Kitty,” spent two weeks working on her quilt under the guidance of grandmother Judy Martin of Chester. Martin began teaching Kaitlen and her sister Tiffany, 11, to quilt last year.
Tiffany’s entry in the show, inspired by her Lhasa apso dog, Fergie, was named runner-up.
The girls and their parents, Jayson and Timea Frye, have lived in Tracy since 2000. Jayson Frye was a Tracy Arts Commission member from 2005 to 2009.
