Kimberly Matlock, an assistant planner for the city of Tracy, said the city was notified of the distinction Thursday, Aug. 9.
Tracy joins Sacramento, Davis and Chula Vista as the top four contenders for the title. Each city receives $10,000 to continue the energy efficient efforts until the challenge ends on March 31, 2013.
The other six cities involved will still participate, but without the benefit of the award.
With 331 participants, Tracy has the most sign-ups, but Matlock noted that only about 100 people are accruing points.
“We’re only getting about one-third of the points we could have,” she said. “We want people to keep getting those points so we can win this.”
Matlock said city officials are developing ways to further engage current participants and attract new sign-ups.
