Motorists driving into and out of Tracy on West 11th Street are now greeted by an eight-foot-high sign displaying logos and information of six Tracy service clubs.

The two-sided sign, topped with the words “At Your Service,” was officially placed into service at noon Thursday, Aug. 9, when representatives of the six clubs that financed the sign’s construction gathered for a close-up look.

Those on hand represented the Sunrise Rotary, Tracy Rotary, Breakfast Lions, Tank Town Lions, Kiwanis and Soroptimist clubs.

Each club is paying close to $700 to build the all-metal sign placed in the median of 11th Street about 300 yards east of Lammers Road.

Mike Souza of Sunrise Rotary, who served as chairman of a committee of the club that promoted the project, said an amendment to the city’s sign ordinance permits placement of a total of six signs in the city.

“Our committee and city officials decided this location is the best place to start,” Souza said. “We have the option of erecting signs at five more locations.”

He said the idea to develop the sign came out of a Sunrise Rotary retreat late last year.

“We agreed it was important to give more visibility to local service clubs and that the sign was the best way to start doing that,” he explained. “That got us going.”

Members of the Sunrise Rotary committee contacted other service clubs, and all responded favorably, Souza reported.

The sign is designed in the same style as a number of “way-finding” signs the city plans to install in the next several years. Tracy Sign Co. produced the all-metal sign, with service club logos and information about meeting places and days and hours of meetings on both sides.

"Sunrise Rotary committee contacted other service clubs, and all responded favorably" I am involved with four other service clubs that have been in the City of Tracy for over 75 years and we were not contacted. Is there room for more emblems?
