Mr. Walter was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School in 1940. He enrolled in college in Santa Maria but left to join the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942. He served as a crew chief and team sergeant in the 354th Fighter Group, supporting troops on D-Day, at Normandy and during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, Mr. Walter worked for H.J. Heinz Co. and then became a correctional officer at Dueul Vocational Institution, a position he held for 26 years.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Barbara Walter of Tracy; daughter, Martha Gladden, and her husband, Paul, of Tracy; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Carl and Anna Marie Walter; brothers, Stanley Walter, Allen Walter and Ted Walter; and sister, Barbara Walter Hibbard.
Saturday’s service will include full military honors, beginning at 10 a.m. at Tracy Cemetery, 501 E. Schulte Road. A reception will follow at the family home, 18806 Nancy Amelia Court.
