Lorri Smith, a Mountain House resident recently diagnosed with myelofibrosis, says a bone marrow transplant is likely her only chance to live longer than a few more years.

Smith, 46, is the mother of four grown sons with husband Kevin Smith — but, as it is for 70 percent of patients who need bone marrow transplants each year, none of her relatives is a perfect match to donate the tissue she needs.

A drive to recruit potential donors is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5, a Sunday, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1635 Chester Drive.

Local residents ages 18 to 60 can sign up with the National Bone Marrow Program’s Be The Match Registry.

Volunteers complete a short health survey and submit a swab of cheek cells to determine tissue type. Those who join the registry must be willing to help any patient in need.

Smith lived in Tracy for several years before moving to Mountain House. She is a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul’s and part of Share the Scoop Ministries.
