A 62-year-old woman died late Saturday, July 7, after a man reportedly attacked her in a room at the Hacienda Inn motel, 639 W. 11th St.

A suspect, identified by Tracy police Lt. Greg Farmanian as 25-year-old Tracy resident Stephen Andrew Carreiro, was arrested after an alleged struggle with police at the hotel.

Carreiro is currently being held at San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp on felony charges of murder, burglary and resisting police, and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing EMS personnel.

No bond has been set, and he is scheduled to appear in the Manteca branch of San Joaquin County Superior Court on Tuesday, July 10, according to the county sheriff's department website.

Farmanian said that both the woman and the suspect were taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital shortly after the incident, which was first reported at 7:12 p.m. Saturday.

Farmanian confirmed a few hours later that the woman had died at the hospital. He did not know the cause of death or the nature of her injuries.

Police are investigating if there was a motive for the alleged attack, Farmanian said. The woman's name was not released. Farmanian said that she was a member of the family that owns the motel, and police are still trying to determine if Carriero had any connection to the hotel.

"It appears to us right now that it might have been a random act," Farmanian said.

The alleged attack and its immediate aftermath drew a large response from neighbors at the hotel and from police.

"There was quite a commotion inside the house. The tenants called 911 for a fight inside one of the rooms," Farmanian said. "We actually were dispatched to 'a naked man fighting with some people.'"

Guests of the hotel reportedly rushed to the woman's aid and struggled with the man until police arrived.

According to a Tracy Police Department press release, the alleged attack occurred in the motel office, and once police arrested Carreiro, they found the victim "adjacent to the office of the motel."

Farmanian said Carreiro was allegedly combative with police and said it took about 20 minutes for officers to subdue him. He was wrapped in a full-body restraint, Farmanian said, and was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, which included a possible broken arm and also a wound to his foot.

Farmanian said the cause of Carreiro’s wound was unclear as of Saturday night.

One man who was in the area at the time of the incident’s first report said he thought he heard a gunshot come from the hotel, but police did not confirm if any shots were fired. Farmanian said that no officers fired any shots, but he did confirm that police found a knife at the scene and broken glass in the room where the alleged attack happened.
