Longtime Tracy resident Juan Alberto Smart, 72, a U.S. Army veteran, died June 17 at his home after a brief illness.

A private celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.

Mr. Smart was born Jan. 12, 1940, in Colon, Panama, and moved to the United States with his family in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, where he met and married his wife of 51 years.

The couple lived in Oakland and Pleasanton before settling in Tracy more than 20 years ago. Mr. Smart worked as a systems analyst for the state of California from 1969 to 2002, when he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Christa Smart of Tracy; two sons, Grant Smart, and his wife, Robin, of Pleasanton and Eric Smart of Tracy; a sister, Linda Smart of the Sacramento area; and two grandchildren.
