Today’s Remember When “mystery photo,” top left, shows four Tracy women lighting a birthday cake. What was the occasion, who were the women and what organization were they members of?

Last week’s Remember When “mystery photo,” bottom left, showed a building at the corner of Sixth and C streets that for years was known as the Acacia Hotel. The two-story wood-frame building was constructed following the massive fire of 1898, which leveled all structures on Sixth Street. Lydia J. Cross established a women’s dry-good and millinery store in the ground flood of the building. She closed her shop in 1920 and became manager of the hotel, which was demolished in the early 1970s.

Charlotte Junqueiro, a member of the pioneer Parker family, reported that Mrs. Cross was her aunt. Barbara Ybanez Johannes wrote via email that she and her husband, Phil, demolished the building for a small fee in 1972 to acquire the lumber for construction of their home in Santa Rosa. The redwood siding was sanded and used for the front exterior, and the pine flooring was sanded and used for interior finish.
