Nonprofit organizations selling fireworks this year received a safety briefing as the opening of fireworks sales, Thursday, June 28, draws near.

Tracy Fire Department Division Chief David Bramell impressed the need for safety upon those running the fireworks booths at the City Council chambers Thursday, June 21.

Nine nonprofits will have one week to sell their fireworks at booths around Tracy, the second year the fireworks have been legal inside city limits.

Booths will be able to sell Thursday, June 28, from noon to 8 p.m. From then through July 3, the sale hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They will be extended to 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. July Fourth.

The so-called “safe and sane” fireworks can be discharged between noon and 8 p.m. from June 28 to July 3, and from noon to midnight on the Independence Day holiday. At 12:01 a.m. July 5, any fireworks are considered illegal to use, Bramell said.

Fireworks that explode or leave the ground — such as firecrackers or bottle rockets — are always illegal to use in California, Bramell said.

It’s also illegal to use any type of fireworks in Mountain Hous, or on any county land not within Tracy’s city limits.

Ugh. Same tired stuff every year. Why only 9 select non-profits and only one-week? The inconsistency is maddening. If the fireworks being sold are safe enough to sell for one week then they are safe enough to sell all year. If you use fireworks on the 8th of December rather than the 4th of July is it suddenly more risky? Similarly, why limit the sales to 9 lucky groups? I am sure there are many non-profits that could benefit. It seems more that a little unequal to let some groups do it but not others, even if the selection is random. Actually that is the worst part. If there were some sort of logical reason for these particular groups to be allowed to sell it would makes more sense but as it stands the selection is completely arbitrary.
