Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash Monday evening that closed a city intersection and injured four people, including a Tracy police officer.

The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the intersection of East Street and Eaton Avenue.

According to Tracy Police Department Lt. Wayde Harper, the Tracy officer was responding with lights and sirens to a call for assistance from another officer, when the cruiser and Chevrolet SUV crashed.

A mother and her two children, who occupied the SUV, and the officer, Harper said, were all transported to a regional hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Harper wouldn't release the name of the officer. Harper also wouldn't release the names of the occupants in the second vehicle or any further details about the crash.

"There will be an accident investigation to determine everything," he said. "We don't do that here at the scene right now."

A one-block radius around the intersection was closed as of 8:30 p.m. as the traffic division of the Tracy Police Department began its investigation.

It appeared that the police car was traveling north on East Street — which has the right of way through the intersection with stop signs on Eaton Avenue — when it struck the back of the SUV. The SUV had visible damage to the right side of its rear.

However, Harper would not confirm those details.

So now this is getting complicated...

The driver of the SUV was in the center (turn-out) lane, when one police car passed..?

Then allegedly as she attempted to merge into the right hand lane (as many have stated is the legal and correct procedure) the 2nd officer had to swerve clipping her passenger-side rear, sending him careening onto the sidewalk and into the light standard.

Why didn't he just simply pass her on the left - if the center-lane would have been open?

Boy I sure wish I was privy to the facts a few people here seem to have access to in relation to this accident. Zimmerman/Martin, Blueford/Oakland PD, now this nonsense. I'll go beyond PublicCitizens armchair quarterbacking comment, popping off before the facts are known is foolish.

Someone awhile back wrote a comment on this site about the police, saying everyday they put on their pants the same as the rest of us so they are no better.

My reply? A few of you may want to take note. They may put their pants on the same as the rest of us but they sure as hell have a much greater chance of not taking them off at the end of the day like the rest of us. They may have a nurse taking them off, or worse yet a coroner.

Really....when was last time a Tracy Police officer was killed in action??? Seems to me that private citizens have a better shot of being killed by a speeding officer....

You armchair quarterbacks really should learn the facts before you speak. There were two police cars speeding to a call, having nowhere on the right to pull over the lady pulled into the center of the street where there is that two way turn lane in the middle of the road. she let the first police car go by and then pulled out in front of the second cruiser that was following behind. Anyone could have done the same not thinking there was two cars behind you with lights and sirens blaring.

If you want to blame someone, blame the POS's that have infested our town and caused the police to respond in such a way that they did.

Thank god no one was seriously injured

no name of officer listed, usually if it were a clear case of a fault of another you would see a name of the victim...

All i know if usually police cars can take some dings..... the damage looks to be very extensive... next to a public park and a school, i have to say they were traveling extremely fast for a city street. Which they have the right to go fast, but they shouldn't go more than 15 or 20 over in a residential

WOWreally,

What training , background, and knowledge of this incident do you have to determine how fast the police officer should be going?

@ pinkwillow

Well this cop supposedly had training and it didn't stop him from Dale Earnhardting a pole in town...so maybe your training's overrated huh?

Correct me if I am wrong, an I know that someone will, but I am under th impression that ya are to pull ta th RIGHT side of th road an stop when emergency traffic is comin up behind ya. An ya should always make certain thair ain't no other traffic on th road comin up behind ya when ya get back on th road.

Not thankin is probably one of th biggest causes of these types of accidents. Th lady didn't thank thair was a cop comin up behind her an th cop didn't thank she was apt ta pull back inta th roadway in front of him.

This also begs th question, did she signal that she was startin ta go down th road again?

Assumin thangs can get ya killed. Fortunately this didn't happen. Yes it's a problem th police had ta be respondin in th way they did but after all, that's what we hired em ta do. Ta blame em fer doin thair job just don't make any sense at all.

Glad no one was seriously hurt. Thangs can be replaced, human life can't.

So a cop jeopardizes a family and destroys public property while driving like a clown to go help his buddy do what....give an old man a ticket for his lawnmower not being properly strapped into his pickup trucks bed??? Tracy PD are useless...

An investigation conducted by the Tracy PD on a Tracy PD Officer. I'll bet I can predict how that will turn out.

You do pose a good question drumhead. What was so critical that the officer who wrecked had to be in that big of a hurry?

Was the first officer being shot at?

Was the first officer being held hostage by an armed gunman?

My guess would be the second officer just got a thrill out of driving fast on public streets. A complete abuse of power.

drumhead, you are the clown. If you can't even entertain a notion contrary to your own biased opinion, don't opine. 21806(a)CVC All drivers shall immediately pull to the RIGHT and stop, and remain stopped. It is very clear, simple and straightforward. Crawl back under your neanderthal rock and please don't procreate.

Drumhead, how fast was the cop going? What was he going to? what direction was the suv going?

You have no information from this article other than second hand info, so there's no way you can place blame on anyone.

Btw your mom says hi.

@ pinkwillow

You need look no further than the picture of the smashed cop car to realize that A) he was going pretty damn fast and B) obviously driving outside of his skill level as is evidenced by the bent pole wrapped around his bumper

P.S. My mom is a douchebag so keep going with the comments they really bug me...LOL!!!

There is one thing that no one is saying about the location of this accident, in the small stretch of road (in front of the Tracy High stadium) there is no way to pull to the right. There is only a right lane, a middle turning lane and oncoming traffic. If the SUV driver stopped for the officer to go around them they would have no place to "pull over" to. They would just be setting in the middle of the road. If the officer came around the corner from 11th street and the SUV had just turned onto East St. They would not have enough time to get out of the way. From the way the officer's car hit the rear driver's side corner it sounds that the officer swung out to go around the driver and clipped the SUV causing the spin out and ended up in the light poll. It sounds like it was no one's falt just an unfortunate accident. I am glad no one was seriously injured.

Hey TEB, the cop hit the passenger side, not the driver side. Any other theories?

A couple of years ago I was at a red light at the corner of 11th and Parker, westbound, second car in line. The car in front of me had his stereo speakers blasting at full volume, that I’m sure all of you are familiar with today. When the light became green and we started to move forward a police car with its siren was coming onto 11th from Parker and nearly collided with the driver with the loud stereo system. I didn’t hear the siren until the police car was right in front of us.

I agree with you DTB1445. It seems whenever an emergency vehicle is approaching with its lights and siren only about half pull over to allow it to proceed without delay to the needed party.

I’m glad to read that everyone involved here only suffered minor injuries and hope for a speedy recovery for all while the investigation into the cause and fault is completed.

As I am reading I am thinking the same thing you said. It is crazy how loud the car stereos are. There is no way they can hear things going on around them. Of course there are other vehicles that make lots of noise too but there are others that apparently don't give a darn when when they are coming. People in general need to pay more attention when driving. Appears that the officer sacrificed his car to avoid more injuries to the other car but will see.

It's good to know none of the injuries are life threatening and not to disregard the occupants of the Suburban, but especially so for the officer. That was a big hit and without a seatbelt and airbag looks like it could've been a lot worse. Even though not life threatening I still hope no any injuries were minor.

I won't opine on who's at fault as I don't have all the facts in this particular incident, but in general I agree with DTB1445. There's a lot of people who are oblivious when emergency vehicles are coming with sirens blaring and lights flashing. Some seem to think, hey whatever, go around, as a matter of fact you're in my way.

It will be interesting to see what happened here.

Not a traffic accident investigator fer shore but it appears th officer was travelin north on East an th SUV pulled out in front of him.

Given th damage ta th police vehicle it seems he avoided th brunt of th energy bein dissipated by th SUV, which don't seem ta have much damage, an instead opted out fer th light pole.

This probably saved th lives of th SUV passengers an put his own life in greater danger.

Like I said, I am not a traffic accident investigator an can only go by what I see in th photos an what was in th article.

Will save my real thoughts on th matter until th investigation has been completed.

Glad they are all alive ta tell th tale but it seems ta me that some quick thankin on th part of th officer, probably in th way of trainin so it was more of a reflex action, saved a lot of life here.

The one who failed to obey the law and pull to the right and stop and allow the emergency vehicle to proceed uninhibited.

Good to hear the injuries are minor. Here is the lesson to be learned. The law says when you hear sirens, or see red lights on an emergency vehicle, you must immediately pull to the right and stop. I see too many drivers indifferent to emergency vehicles on code 3 runs. I think they must be thinking " they will go around me if they need to" I bet if you were the ones who called, or the ones who needed the help, they'd want people to get out of the way and let the emergency vehicle go unaffected by traffic. It only takes 4 minutes to bleed to death, and with prompt medical intervention, a death could be averted. Please people, obey the law, pull over to the right immediately and let them go by you.

It appears that one driver was speeding down a side street and blew off a stop sign, based on the pictures. So who is at fault?
