The club, a student service organization sponsored by Tracy Rotary Club, has collected recyclables from campus trash bins while at the same time raising funds for community projects.
The recycling program was the brainchild of Jai Kannan, the club president.
“I wanted to make a program that could generate revenue as well as solve the existing recycling problem,” she said. “There were no bins around campus and (we) would just throw away our plastic bottles in the garbage can. I hated that, so we decided to make a change.”
Once members of the student service club became involved, it was a success, Kannan said.
In addition to the efforts of the Interact members, special-needs children are helping collect recyclables on the Kimball campus.
Revenue from the program helped the club sponsor community-
service projects, including a Christmas dinner for residents of McHenry House Family Shelter and the purchase of toys for children at the shelter.
A book drive also provided books to students in 12 schools in Tracy and Mountain House.
