West senior Elisha Mitchell captured the Division I long jump title with a first-place mark of 22 feet, 5½ inches.
“It felt good out there and felt comfortable,” he said. “I haven’t been jumping well so far so I felt good about this one.”
Also qualifying were two pole vaulters from Tracy High. Junior Kaitlin Mizuno placed seventh (9-3) in the girls competition and senior Justin Woo (12-8), finished in a five-way tie for 10th in the boys competition.
They are among 13 local athletes who advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet, Thursday, May 24, and Friday, May 25, at Elk Grove High, for an opportunity to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation state championships on June 1 and 2.
West High junior Eddie Kaye had already qualified for Masters on Wednesday, May 16, the first day of the D-I meet, in the 200 meters and 400 meters, and then competed on -Friday in the championship races, placing third in the 200 (22.97) and sixth in the 400 (49.25).
“It felt really good to be racing against the top in our section,” Kaye said, singling out first-place finisher Corey Mason of St. Mary’s and second-place qualifier Khari Dobbins of Bear Creek. “It was very challenging and I felt very good about it. I felt I could have done better, but what happened and I can’t wait to see them at Masters.”
Other athletes from West who also qualified for Masters on Wednesday were Deon Pinder, who won the triple jump (47 feet), senior Nina Pritchett, third in the girls discus (120-7) and junior Ernest Turner, eighth in the boys triple jump (43-4¾).
Tracy High junior Taylor Juarez qualified on Wednesday with a seventh place finish in the high jump (5-1).
Five Kimball High athletes qualified at the Division IV meet on Tuesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 17, at Modesto Junior College.
Kimball junior Chloe Jenkins won the 100-meter hurdles (15.72) and the 300-meter hurdles (46.04). Jaleyah Douglass won the shot put (35-8.25) and the discus (129-3). Francesca Loayza placed third in the 3200 (11:50.84), Cara McClain was fourth in the discus (107-3), and Derek Van de Streek was sixth in the triple jump (43-2).
