Cadres Shelton, a graduating Tracy High School senior and founder of the local chapter of the Becca’s Closet charity, is in the running for a $10,000 scholarship through North Fair Oaks Festival.

As a finalist, she is guaranteed $2,000. To win the top prize, however, she needs help, said mother Babette Shelton.

The five finalists, selected from among hundreds of applicants, are competing to sell the most $5 raffle tickets by July 31 for prizes including travel to Mexico, electronics and gift cards. Proceeds from the sales will support Drug Abuse Resistance Education and the Sheriff’s Activities League in San Mateo County, where the festival is held.

In addition to her work distributing more than 700 free prom dresses through Becca’s Closet, Cadres Shelton is chairwoman of the Youth Advisory Commission; an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate; and reigning Miss Tracy Latina, selected by South Side Community Organization.

On June 3, she will travel to Los Angeles to deliver 200 dresses to girls dealing with life-threatening illnesses who will attend a prom sponsored by nonprofit No Worries Now.

Cadres Shelton will study human resources at Menlo Business College in the fall.

Those who wish to buy

raffle tickets can reach Babette Shelton at 510-714-7482 or babette.shelton@libertymutual.com.
