They placed among the top-five finishers in their events to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championships on Wednesday and Friday, May 16 and 18, at Elk Grove High School.
The outcome of the TCAL finals on Thursday, held at Edison High in Stockton, put the Wolf Pack freshman-sophomore boys as the league champion for the second year in a row. West’s boys won all five of their league dual meets during the spring season, and tied for first with Tokay in the championship meet, each team with 155 points.
The frosh-soph girls share the TCAL title with Tokay after West won all five dual meets and then came in second to Tokay at the league meet, Tokay with 180 team points, West with 117.5.
West’s varsity boys finish in second place this year after they went 4-1 in league duals and placed second in the league meet. Stagg High of Stockton was the league champion, winning all of its dual meets and the league meet with 157 points while West and Tokay tied for second at the league meet with 101 points each, with West beating Tokay in the head-to-head matchup on April 19.
West’s varsity girls finished in third place in league duals, with losses to St. Mary’s and McNair, and third in the championship meet with 82 points behind Tokay, 119 points, and St. Mary’s, 109 points. St. Mary’s was league champion, based on wins in league duals, and Tokay was second with two losses in league duals.
Varsity boys
West senior Deon Pinder won both the triple jump and the high jump. His triple jump mark of 48 feet, 7 inches is a new Tri-City Athletic League record and a new school record. Pinder also won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-8. He also qualified in the long jump, placing second (21-5).
Lorenzo Hughes won the 3200-meter run (10:15.62), and also qualified in the 1600 meters, were he placed second (4:39.27). Elisha Mitchell won the long jump (21-06) and qualified in the 200-meter dash (23.12).
Other qualifiers among West’s varsity boys include Eddie Kaye, who was second in the 200 (22.32) and third in the 400 (51.04); and Ernest Turner, who was third in the triple jump (42-5) and fifth in the long jump (20-0). Gorman Chen was second in the 300 hurdles (42.86), Marcus Graves was fourth in the discus (120-10), and fifth place qualifiers were Marley Alailefaleula in the discus (120-3), Nicholas Vik in the 1600 (4:52.73), and Daniel Baratta in the pole vault (10-0).
West’s 4x400-meter relay team of Kaye, Chen, Turner and Mitchell also qualified with a fifth-place finish (3:56.50).
Varsity girls
West senior Nina Pritchett won the discus with her throw of 110 feet even. Pritchett also placed third in the shot put (33-5½). Also heading to the division meet is Megan Grady after she placed second in both the long jump (16-4) and 200 meter dash (25.76), and fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.62).
Maliyah Shavers qualified with her second-place triple jump (33-5), and fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:01.55). Margaret Southards placed third in both the 100-meter hurdles (16.69) and 300-meter hurdles (50.57). Alexis Grandison placed third in both the long jump (15-6) and triple jump (31-6½). Fifth-place qualifiers were Mursal Mohsini, high jump (4-2), Summer Flowers, long jump (15-3) and Mellisa Villacarte, shot put (29-10).
West will send both of its varsity girls relay teams to the division meet. The 4x400-meter team of Southards, Grady, Shavers and Emily Wittkowske placed fourth (5:52.67); and the 4x100-meter team of Flowers, Shavers, Southards and Grady placed fifth (50.69).
Freshman-sophomore boys
West’s Lautaime Alailefaleula won both the shot put (45-0) and the discus (115-0). Richard Tran won the 1600 (5:01.44) and placed second in both the 800 (2:18.80) and 3200 (11:21.13). Kirk Truehill won the 100 (11.65), placed second in the triple jump (37-1½), and was third in the 200 (24.00). Noah Martinez won the pole vault (9-6).
Other medalists include Barak Nehoran, second in both the 300 hurdles (47.46) and high jump (4-10), and third in the 110 hurdles (18.12). Daniel Haley placed third in both the long jump (18-7) and triple jump (36-9).
West’s 4x100-meter relay team of Jose Ramirez-Huiron, Nehoran, Michael Juarez and Haley placed second (48.58), and the 4x400-meter relay team of Marco Ahumada, Tim Banh, Youavon Robles and Juarez placed third (3:58.06).
Freshman-sophomore girls
Lydia Young was the Wolf Pack’s top performer with wins in the 100-meter dash (13.53), the 200 (28.49) and triple jump (31-10½). Karla Sasing placed second in the long jump (13-5) and third in both the pole vault (6-6) and triple jump (26-5). Emily Wittkowske was second in the 400-meter dash (1:07.32) and shot put (22-7).
Other second-place athletes were Kimberly Gomez, the 100 hurdles (19.66) and Elise Green, triple jump (29-3), and Trishana Wilson placed third in the 200 (29.98).
Also taking first was West’s 4x100-meter relay team of Gomez, Young, Wilson and Wittkowske (54.94), and taking second in the 4x400-meter relay team of Gomez, Sarah Southards, Green and Wilson (4:51.63).
