Twice-Told Tales: Tracy gets its first winery 10 years ago

10 years ago — 2002

A converted barn on Lehman Road southeast of town is the home of Tracy’s first winery. Herve Chevaillier and Tom Schubert are partners in the winery, known as La Bonne Vie, which means “the good life” in French.

Tracy’s annual Keena Turner Golf Tournament, now in its seventh year, is moving this year to The Course at Wente Vineyards south of Livermore. The tourney, which raises funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tracy, started at Tracy Golf & Country Club and then went to the Sunol Valley Golf Club.

Tracy representatives to Boys State and Girl State leadership conferences this summer will be Joseph Masquelier and Jessica Wyant of West High and Shiv Verma and Stephanie Smith from Tracy High.

West High’s baseball team waxed East Union of Manteca, 20-6. Leading the Wolf Pack attack were Brad Edwards, with three hits and four RBIs, and C.J. Arnold, with a home run and five RBI.

Awards have been presented to students, teachers and community members at the second Community Celebration of Character of the Tracy Unified School District.



25 years ago — 1987

Forty high school and middle school bands marched and played along 11th Street for the 10th annual Tracy Band Review. Merced High won the sweepstakes trophy.

Tracy real estate offices are celebrating American Home Week with a community cleanup project, fashion show, luncheon and golf tournament. Maggie Priebe is president of the sponsoring Tracy Board of Realtors.

Some 40,000 gallons of gasoline spilled when a construction crew accidentally punctured a petroleum pipeline along Grant Line Road near Corral Hollow Road.

Tracy High seniors are hosting the annual senior tea, a traditional start of graduation activities.

The Tracy Angels dumped the Oakdale Vaqueros, 13-3, in opening Mexican-American Baseball League play. “Iggy” Yniguez poled a three-run homer in the seventh inning to cap the win.

Round Table Pizza has been opened in the GranTrace shopping center at 2503 Tracy Blvd. It is one of 19 units operated by H&H Pizza of Tracy.



50 years ago — 1962

Claude Marona of Dinuba has been hired to be business manager of the soon-to-be-formed Tracy Public Schools, which will manage both Tracy High and Tracy Elementary school districts.

Air-raid sirens sounded throughout Tracy for a civil defense test, but there were gaps in coverage in town.

Burglars cracked the safe at Caldron’s Jewelry at 939 Central Avenue, getting away with some $5,000 in merchandise.

Alvin Correia tied the Tracy High Class C 100-yard dash record of 10.6 seconds in a dual track meet with Sonora.

Ted Baskette is the new president of the San Joaquin Valley Hay Growers Association.

Richard Hastie has been named a Junior Chamber International senator in recognition of his contribution to Jaycees in Tracy and throughout California.



75 years ago — 1937

As signatures are being gathered on a petition calling for the recall of Councilman J. Frank Doughty, a special election is looming in Tracy.

R.E. Lowery has become a partner with Jiggs Ackerman in Jiggs Fountain at 11th and Walnut streets.

Earl B. Shoesmith, superintendent of the Tracy Elementary School District, has been elected president of the Tracy Rotary Club.



100 years ago — 1912

Mayor Abe Grunauer escaped serious injury when a horse-drawn buggy in which he was riding slid off a levee road near Rio Vista.

City trustees (city council) members have ordered two hose carts and 1,000 feet of double-jacket hose for the new Tracy Fire Department.

Henry Ludwig, whose saloon burned to the ground in the September 1911 fire, is reopening a new establishment on Front (Sixth) Street.
