The San Antonio-based real estate firm is building a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center that the online retailer plans to operate starting in spring 2013 in Patterson, about 20 miles southeast of Tracy.
Thursday’s announcement came the same day Amazon officials announced another new fulfillment center in San Bernardino. The company’s closest fulfillment center to the Tracy area previously had been in Fernley, Nev.
Patterson city officials announced in January that a company wanted to operate a 1 million-square-foot distribution-type facility in Patterson, which they dubbed “Project X,” but they did not release any more details.
At the time, city officials said the facility would offer 1,500 full-time jobs.
Amazon spokesman Ty Rogers did not give specifics Thursday about the number of people the fulfillment center would employ, saying only that it would provide hundreds of full-time jobs with benefits.
On Dec. 21, the Tracy City Council in a special meeting gave staff at City Hall approval to offer an incentive package to commercial or industrial users.
If a company located in Tracy and brought at least 1,000 full-time-equivalent jobs and annual gross sales of at least $100 million, the city was prepared to offer a temporary sales tax rebate or other "financial incentive."
Seattle-based Amazon.com, a Fortune 500 company, was launched in 1995 as a place to buy books and has since expanded to include sales of myriad other items. It also produces Kindle electronic reader devices. The company has 43,000 full-time and part-time employees worldwide, according to the company’s website.
