The varsity boys beat McNair High of Stockton 116-27 to finish at 4-1 in TCAL duals, and still have a chance to finish as league champions depending on the outcome of the TCAL league met on Wednesday and Friday, May 9 and 11, at Edison High.
West’s other teams have to complete some of the field events from their meet against Tokay, cut short because of rain on March 28.
Top performers among West’s varsity boys include Lorenzo Hughes, who won both distance events. He ran the 1600 meters in 4 minutes, 50 seconds, and the 3200 meters in 10:30. Sprinter Eddie Kaye won both the 400 meters (51.60) and 200 meters (22.94) while Deon Pinder won both the long jump (21 feet, seven inches) and the high jump (6-0).
Also taking first was West’s 4x100-meter relay team of Gorman Chen, Eddie Kaye, Elisha Mitchell and Pinder with a time of 44.05.
The varsity girls lost to McNair 61-56 are now 2-2 in league.
Top athletes among West’s varsity girls included Margaret Southards, who won the 100-meter hurdles (16.30) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.72). Megan Grady won both the 200-meter dash (26.88) and the long jump (15-6).
Both the freshman-sophomore girls and boys are undefeated and could finish as league champions if they outscore Tokay and win at the TCAL meet next week. The frosh-soph boys beat McNair 99-33, and the girls beat McNair 71-31.
Leading the way for the frosh-soph boys was Youavon Robles, who won both the 1600 meters, 5:36, and 800 meters, 2:25, and Lautaime Alailefaleula, winner of the shot put, 45-1.5, and discus, 108-9. West’s relay team of Ramirez, Barak Nehoran, Daniel Haley, Michael Juarez won the 4x100 meters, 49.39, and the 4x400 meters, 4:18.47.
Lydia Young won three events for West, including the 100 meters, 13.61, the 200 meters, 29.59, and the triple jump, 28-9. Elise Green also won three events, including the 800 meters, 2:55, the long jump, 14-3.5, and the high jump, 3-10. West’s relay team of Karla Sasing, Young, Kimberly Gomez and Trishana Wilson won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 59.41
West vs. Edison
The West High track and field team hosted Edison High on Thursday, April 26, in Steve Lopez Stadium with both the boys and girls teams prevailing.
The varsity boys beat Edison 82-28. Jose Alonso won the 110-meter hurdles (19.3) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.91) while Eddie Kaye won the 100-meter dash (11.26) and the 200-meter dash (22.75).
The varsity girls beat Edison 73-27. Margaret Southards won the 100-meter hurdles, (16.42) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.75). Alexis Grandison won the high jump (4-3) and the triple jump (32-0). Nina Pritchett won the shot put (35-6) and the discus (120-3).
Barak Nehoran won three events as West’s freshman-sophomore boys outscored Edison 108-12. Nehoran won the 110-meter hurdles, 18.48, the 300-meter hurdles, 50.16, and the high jump, 5-0. Richard Tran won the 1600 meters, 5:16, and 800 meters, 2:25. Lautaime Alailefaleula won both the shot put, 44-6, and the discus, 122-0. West’s 4x100-meter relay team of Jose Ramirez-Huiron, Nehoran, Daniel Haley and Michael Juarez won their event with a time of 48.75.
The frosh-soph girls beat Edison 66-6. Elise Green won the 1600 meters, 6:46, 800 meters, 2:57, and long jump, 13-9. Emily Wittkowske won both the shot put, 22-10, and discus, 58-10. West’s 4x100-meter relay team of Kyra McIntrye, Wittkowske, Kimberly Gomez and Lydia Young won their event with a time of 53.09.
