Folsom swept the singles matches and won two of the three doubles matches at West High in Tracy.
West earned the match against Folsom, the No. 3 seed from the Delta River League, by emerging out of a four-team pack in the Tri-City Athletic League that included St. Mary’s, McNair and Tokay. All finished tied for second place with 5-5 TCAL records, with 3-3 marks against one another.
West took second in league based on a tiebreaker of total matches won. Edison High took the title with a 10-0 mark, and Stagg finished 0-10.
Just to be in playoffs was a big step forward for a young West team, made up mostly of sophomores and freshmen, said coach Christine Toon
“All the matches were really close,” Toon said. “They just need a little experience.”
West’s only win Monday was in the No. 3 doubles match, as Bob Lopez and Josh Theobald won their first set 6-0 and then lost 4-6. They went on to play a tiebreaker and won that, 10-7.
“I think we underestimated them in the second set,” Theobald said. “They got us back, and it ended up going to a tiebreaker, and that was close, too.”
In the singles matches, Alex Xu lost 3-6, 4-6; Jahan Viejh lost 2-6, 3-6; Ahssan Khan lost 3-6, 4-6; Andrew Ly lost 1-6, 1-6; and both Artemio Marquez and Calvin Ly lost their matches 0-6, 0-6.
In doubles, Mark Olson and Lucas Vasquez lost 3-6, 0-6, and Joey Li and Michael Lim lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6.
West’s Khan said that Monday’s competition gave him an idea of what it would take to move forward next year.
“My opponent was really quick and aggressive, and I wasn’t as aggressive as he was,” Khan said. “I think I need to improve on my stroke and my speed and power in order to dominate on the court.”
He added that the team could see the year as something to build on.
“We got second place in the league, and I thought we did really good, considering that we have a lot of new players.”
