But it was no recreational game that descended on Tracy.
Twenty-one teams of Ultimate Frisbee players came to town for the USA Ultimate NorCal Division I College Regional Qualifier on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22.
Tournament director Kerry Karter of Livermore said that in his 30 years of Ultimate Frisbee, mostly out of Las Positas College, the growing challenge has been finding places to play.
Plasencia Fields turned out to be an ideal venue for teams as far south as Santa Cruz and as far north as Arcata. He added that the city of Tracy was key to helping organizers host a division-level event in a place where as many as 11 games going on at once.
“In Pleasanton, it’s getting harder and harder to get fields, so for the past two years we’ve been trying to find a home,” Karter said.
The tournament included 12 “open” teams made mostly of men with some women members, and there was also a tournament with nine women’s teams.
Contact is limited, there are no referees, and teams themselves make the calls on out-of-bounds and traveling violations while trying to toss the disc to a teammate in the end zone.
Stanford University and U.C. Berkeley went 5-0 in open division pool play and made it to the championship game, where Stanford won, 12-11. Both teams head to USA Ulitimate’s Southwest Regionals in Scottsdale, Ariz., on April 28 and 28, with a chance to go to the national championships in Boulder, Colo, on May 25 to 28.
Also heading to regional competition are the teams from U.C. Davis, Chico State, Las Positas Community College, Humboldt State and U.C. Santa Cruz.
Champion of the women’s division was Humboldt State, which beat U.C. Berkeley, 12-10, on Saturday. Stanford then beat Berkeley to take second place. Sonoma State was fourth, U.C. Davis fifth and U.C. Santa Cruz sixth.
They all head to regional competition in Arizona.
