A game to decide the leader of the Tri-City Athletic League between West and St. Mary’s was interrupted by rain Wednesday, April 25, with the contest tied 5-5 in the ninth inning.

At Arnaiz Fields in Stockton, the Wolf Pack (5-1 TCAL) was battling to claim a share of the league title when the game was suspended.

West coach Steve Anastasio said that St. Mary’s had a 5-4 lead going into the seventh, but West’s Jill Anastasio followed Ciara Ervin’s triple with a base hit put the game into extra innings.

As of Thursday afternoon, the teams had not announced when the game will be finished.

West 7, Tokay 4

Except for a series of hits in the fifth inning, West senior pitcher Kasey Cota and the Wolf Pack defense kept the Tokay Tigers under control in West’s 7-4 win at home Tuesday, April 24.

“It was really nice to be back in my groove,” Cota said. “My defense was behind me. I got a lot of ground balls. I knew they were going to get hits off of me, because they’re a really good-hitting team.”

The win improves West’s record to 5-1 in the Tri-City Athletic League, which means today’s game against league leader St. Mary’s at Arnaiz Fields in Stockton is the Wolf Pack’s chance to grab a share of this year’s TCAL title.

“We came into today just going one game at a time,” West coach Steve Anastasio said Tuesday. “We weren’t even thinking about tomorrow. Now, we’ll just think about tomorrow.”

Tokay scored first when the Tigers’ leadoff batter walked, then advanced on a couple of infield grounders and scored on an error. West came right back with three runs in the bottom of the first on base hits from Celina Carrisosa, Ashley Tornio and Miranda Gannon.

The Wolf Pack made it a 4-1 game in the second when Shelby Weeks tripled to left field, and then scored on a double steal attempt with Tornio, who was tagged at first base for the out.

Gannon got her third RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the third, and Julia Ramirez drove in a run with a double along the left-field line to make it a 6-1 game.

Tokay made it a 7-4 game with three base hits and three runs in the top of the fifth, but those were the only hits Cota gave up Tuesday, April 24.

Otherwise, the Wolf Pack defense made quick work of Tigers batters. Second baseman Carrisosa made a diving stop and throw to first for an out, and shortstop Tornio made a diving catch to rob a batter of a line-drive base hit.

Tracy 10, Chavez 0

Julia Fernandez struck out 13 Chavez batters as the Tracy High softball team finished off Chavez in six innings on Wednesday, April 25, at the Tracy Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs (16-4 overall, 3-2 San Joaquin Athletic Association) collected 16 hits for the day, including three for Ellie Fisher, who also batted in a run.

Brianna Warner had two hits and three RBIs while Fernandez had two hits and batted in a run and Haley Nunes recorded two hits against Chavez (6-12, 0-5).

Earlier in the week on Monday, April 23, three-run home run off the bat of Alee Balanon in the fifth inning sealed a 7-1 win for Tracy against Lodi.

Julia Fernandez pitched all seven innings for Tracy and allowed three hits.

The Bulldogs’ leading batters included Jazmin Clarke, with two hits and two RBIs; Brianna Warner, with three hits and an RBI; Haley Nunes, with two hits; and Tayler Misfeldt, with an RBI triple.

Kimball 12, Manteca 1

The Jaguar batters collected 15 base hits on the way to a five-inning win Tuesday, April 24 in Manteca.

Alexis Lopez (14-4) allowed one run on five hits and struck out three Manteca (10-9 overall, 5-6 Valley Oak League) batters.

Montanna Bradley led the Jaguars (16-4 overall, 8-2 VOL) at the plate, going 4-for-4, including a triple and three RBIs. Arianna Hawkins hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning while Kate Bomar had three base hits and an RBI, Llesenia Torres had two hits and two RBIs, Anisha Richardson hit an RBI triple, Katie Hanville doubled and drove in a run. Allison Corlis also doubled, Danielle Lallos singled and batted in a run; and Gabbi Cox singled.

Defensively, Kimball turned two double plays. In the second inning, with one out and a runner on first, second baseman Torres made an unassisted put-out when she fielded a grounder, tagged the runner and made the throw to Bradley at first to end the inning. In the fourth inning, Richardson snagged a line drive at third base and made a quick throw to Torres at second to catch a runner off base.

Millennium 9, Big Valley Christian 2

Millennium starting pitcher Breana Reyes threw seven complete innings with eight strikeouts, giving up four hits, to lead the Falcons to victory Tuesday at Big Valley Christian in Modesto.

Reyes also had three base hits and an RBI for the Falcons (9-3 overall, 3-0 Central California Athletic Alliance). Shyan Carpenter singled and tripled, and Shawni Carpenter had a base hit and two RBIs in the win over Big Valley (1-8-2 overall, 0-3 CCAA).

Sophomores: West 8, Tokay 4

Samantha Asbra doubled and singled twice in West’s 8-4 win over Tokay on Tuesday. West (17-5 overall, 5-1 Tri-City Athletic League) took a 5-1 lead after two innings and was ahead 6-3 going into the sixth, when Kayla Lopez, Haley Hollis and Asbra hit consecutive doubles to drive in two more runs. Hollis also had a single, as did Zoe Gaviola, who pitched for West and allowed four runs on four hits for the win.

Sophomores: Kimball 11, Manteca 2

Kimball’s sophomore team moved to 9-0-1 in the Valley Oak League with a strong team performance on the road against Manteca Tuesday, April, 24.

Starting pitcher Priscilla Franco struck out five Manteca batters, and offensive leaders included Sammy Vargas, who doubled twice, singled and batted in two runs; Alyssa Lewis, who singled twice, doubled and batted in a run; Hailey Garza, who tripled and batted in two; Lexie Clark, who had two hits and two RBIs; Gigi Vega and Megan Macias, who both singled and drove in runs; and Hailey Shuey, who had a base hit.

Freshmen: Kimball 11, Manteca 0

Kimball High’s freshmen lead the Valley Oak League with a 6-0 record, 15-2-1 overall, after they knocked over Manteca on Tuesday, April 24 at Kimball High.

Pitcher Tahnee Trew struck out six batters and gave up one hit over five innings. She also hit two homers to drive in four runs for the Jaguars. Sahra Tatum went 3-for-3 and batted in three runs; Matteya Cobbs had two hits, three RBIs and four stolen bases; Hailey Hummel had two base hits; Pooja Ramankutty singled and had three stolen bases; and Jalana Burton, Danika Peterson, Kiana Schober all had singles.

Sophomores: Lodi 2, Tracy 0

Tracy batters were struck out 16 times in a close lose in Lodi.

Kimberly Paschal pitched six innings and allowed two runs, one of them earned, on two hits and had no walks and seven strikeouts for the Bulldogs (13-2-1 overall, 2-2 San Joaquin Athletic Association).

Tracy’s Felisha Suniga got the Bulldogs’ only hit of the day as the Lodi pitcher logged 16 strikeouts.
