Swimming: Kimball splits last home meet of season

Kimball High’s swim team finished its Valley Oak League dual season Thursday, April 19, with a home match against Manteca High.

Kimball’s girls beat Manteca, 95-77, as a team and stand at 4-3 in the VOL as they head to the league championship meet Friday, April 28, at Weston Ranch High in Stockton.

Kimball’s boys are 2-5 in the VOL after losing to Manteca, 88-80.

The league meet will be one more chance for swimmers to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section meet, which is May 10 to 12 at Tokay High.

Kimball’s Michaela Loomis has already qualified to compete at the section level, and on Thursday she again swam section-qualifying times. They include her second-place time in the 200-yard individual medley of 2 minutes, 25 seconds, and her winning time in the 100-yard butterfly of 1:05.15.

Also qualifying for the section meet is the 200-yard medley relay team of Courtney Andres, Loomis, Sydnie Black and Valerie Wong, who won Thursday’s event with a time of 2:08.84.

Other top swimmers among Kimball’s girls include Sydnie Black, who won the 50-yard freestyle, 28.34, and 500-yard freestyle, 6:41.66. Jhackeline Romero won the 200-yard freestyle, 2:32.37; Courtney Moberg won the 100-yard freestyle, 1:04.28; and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Black, Moberg, Romero and Courtney Andres won its event with a time of 4:34.83.

Top swimmers among Kimball’s varsity boys include John Harsch, who won both the 200 freestyle, 2:21.25, and 500 freestyle, 6:03.22; Seth Suzuki, who won the 100-yard butterfly, 1:03.31; Daniel Van Niekerk, who captured the 100-yard backstroke title, 1:07.16; and Marcus Darnell, who won the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:17.22.

Also taking first place Thursday was Kimball’s 200-yard medley relay team of Dustin Branscomb, Marcus Darnell, Suzuki and Van Niekerk with a time of 2:00.75.

West vs. Stagg and McNair

West High’s varsity swim teams claimed wins against both Stagg and McNair at home Wednesday, April 18.

The Wolf Pack swim team is scheduled for one more Tri-City Athletic League dual meet on Friday, April 20, against Edison at the Pinkie Phillips Aquatics Center, and then will prepare for the TCAL championship meet April 27 and 28 at St. Mary’s High in Stockton.

West’s varsity boys beat Stagg, 119-25, and McNair, 95-68.

Matt Van Niekerk made the sections in the 200-yard individual medley, where he placed first overall with a time of 2 minutes, 14.34 seconds. The West 200-yard medley relay team of Bradley McCain, Mico Torregosa, Van Niekerk and Alexander Kraschinsky also qualified for the section meet with an overall first-place time of 1:55.44.

Also finishing in first overall was McCain in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:06.16, and 500-yard freestyle, 5:41.74; Kraschinsky in the 200-yard freestyle, 2:11.04; Torregosa in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:16.64; and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of McCain, Torregosa, Matt Dunniway and Kraschinsky with a time of 4:11.78.

West’s varsity girls beat Stagg, 122-44, and beat McNair 134-21.

Overall first-place swimmers for West were:

Heather Porter in the 200-yard freestyle, 2:32.35, and 100-yard backstroke, 1:19.34; Danielle Nghiem in the 50-yard freestyle, 30.24; Kristen Steed in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:18.33; Cassidy Waters in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:01.94; and Madison Tessera in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:17.91.

West’s relay team of Waters, Tessera, Steed and Geraldine Vasquez took first overall in the 200-yard medley relay, 2:27.66, and the 400-yard freestyle relay, 4:27.38; and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Porter, Nghiem, Emily Stoica and Marylou Manzo took first overall in its event with a time of 2:06.54.
