Tracy High School’s Building A, commonly called the West Building, will become the James C. Franco Building on Saturday, April 21.

Dedicating the two-story building completed in 2009 in the name of the present superintendent of Tracy Unified School District will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Earlier this year, Tracy Unified trustees voted to name the building for Franco after deciding it was an appropriate way of honoring the superintendent for his 25 years of service to the district, including developing the Measure E bond (not to be confused with the city’s sales tax initiative) that provided local funding for the building.

Initially, the board considered naming the building for the late Dr. Joseph S. West, a major force in establishing in 1912 the Tracy Joint Union High School District, now a part of Tracy Unified.

What will be the Franco Building contains 34 classrooms, two staff rooms and Tracy High administration offices. The 61,000-square-foot, tilt-up concrete-wall structure, built in the mission-revival architectural style, has a façade replicating that of the original 1917 Tracy High building.

Franco has been superintendent of the district since 2002. He moved to Tracy in 1987 from Juneau, Alaska, to become principal of Monte Vista Middle School. He later became principal at Tracy High and then assistant superintendent for educational services.
