Kimball beat Sonora 3-0 in the first round of Valley Oak League play on March 21, but on Wednesday the Jaguars had a hard time getting through the Sonora defense. The Wildcats shifted their field positions to put more players near their goal, which meant that Kimball was able to control the midfield and deny many of Sonora’s chances of getting close enough to threaten the Jaguars’ goal.
It also meant that Kimball’s offensive attacks ran up against a wall of defenders, so there were few opportunities for clear shots.
Kimball took the lead with Adaurie Dayak’s goal in the 12th minute off of Natalie Lambert’s corner kick. Sonora scored five minutes into the second half on a goal from Gabriella Baldonado.
Kimball played most of the second half without team scoring leader Lambert, who was injured in a collision with a Sonora player, and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Offensive players Dayak, Amber Lennier and Abigail Dyer continued to put pressure on the Sonora goal, but they got few clear shots on the goal.
Kimball’s freshman-sophomore team lost to Sonora 2-1. Sonora had a 2-0 lead up until the end, when Emily Aronna scored with three minutes left in the second half.
