Seven stores will be closed in California, including the Manteca Best Buy store at 934 Perimeter Drive.
In a press released issued April 14, officials wrote the decision to close the stores was not easy.
“We chose these stores carefully and are working to ensure the impact to our employees will be as minimal as possible, while servicing all customers in a convenient and satisfying way. We expect most of these stores will permanently close by May 12.”
According to CBS Money Watch, Best Buy was looking to cut costs by $800 million by 2015.
CBS also reported Best Buy lost $1.7 billion — or $4.89 per share — for the three-month period ending March 3. That compares with a reported profit of $651 million, or a gain of $1.62 per share, in the same timeframe a year ago.
Calls to Best Buy media officials were not returned.
Sonia’s Restaurant hosts grand opening
Sonia’s Restaurant in the McKinley Shopping Center at 2312 N. Tracy Blvd. welcomed customers with a grand opening April 11, introducing Tracy to its variety of traditional Mexican dishes.
Owner Sonia Morales brings 11 years of experience to her family-run business that serves a variety of traditional fare for lunch and dinner, including burritos, enchiladas, tacos and tamales.
Morales got her start in the restaurant business working for her uncle in Livermore. She moved to Tracy nine years ago.
Sonia’s builds on the skills she learned at her uncle’s side, dishing out chile rellenos and a Cancun platter featuring prawns, crab and chicken.
The restaurant also serves up non-traditional items, including New York steak, a seafood platter and Buffalo wings.
Takeout dining and catering are available in addition the sit-down restaurant, which features a full bar.
Sonia’s Restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
I'm also not surprised to hear Manteca's store is closing. There was a lawsuit a year or two back between Best Buy and the center's developers about the lack of tenants in the center (I believe they were promised 80% full by 09 or something), so I can't imagine it was a high-volume store. It's still a shame, and I hope that the employees land on their feet.
