Accolades: Fifth-grader wins patriotic essay contest

An essay written by Andrew Haynes, a fifth-grade student at Freiler School, recently took first place in a Central District contest sponsored by the Elks, winning a prize of $200.

Andrew’s essay, which discusses his reasons for pledging allegiance to the American flag, won the Tracy Elks Lodge’s local contest in February, earning him $50.

It has been forwarded to the state chairman for further judging, according to Joan Rickman, Americanism chairman of the Tracy Elks Lodge.
