West High’s soccer team (0-10-1, 0-2-1 TCAL) made strides on Tuesday, April 10, but still failed to breakout of its slump in a 1-1 tie against visiting Tri-City Athletic League rival Stagg High (2-13, 1-1-1 TCAL).
Stagg scored first on an open shot about 15 minutes into the first half. Kimberly Becerra scored for West about 15 minutes later to tie the game.
West came out strong in the second half, and kept the ball on Stagg’s side of the field for most of the rest of the game, but Stagg’s defense held up well, allowing West only a few shots on goal.
As the end of regulation neared, the Delta Queens made a charge past West’s defenders for an open shot on the goal with about a minute left on the clock. Wolf Pack goalkeeper Saman Latifi was in position to block the solid shot.
West coach Abel Dorado said that he was encouraged to see his team put the pressure on Stagg’s defense, which is a good sign for the rest of the season.
“We’ll do better,” he said. “As long as everybody tries hard that’s all I expect.”
In a separate game, the freshman-sophomore team beat Stagg 8-0.
Karla Perez scored three goals, Maddie Wright and Natalia Bijak each tallied two goals and Isabel Barajas recorded one. The win puts West at 1-1-1 in the TCAL.
Tracy 4, Franklin 2
A second league victory, a 4-2 win at home over Franklin, puts Tracy High’s soccer team on top of the San Joaquin Athletic Association early season standings.
But the Friday, April 6, game wasn’t a cakewalk. The Bulldogs (9-2 overall, 2-0 SJAA) were given a second-half surprise the Yellow Jackets, who showed the potential to take the game back after Tracy took a 2-0 lead at the half. Franklin tied it up with a couple goals early in the period.
Tracy senior striker Autumn Bolton said that her team never lost confidence.
“We know we can beat these teams and know that we have what it takes,” she said. “Especially after they scored their second goal, we knew that we had to buckle down and we had to get our next two goals in.”
Coach Nate Perry said that the team had focused so much on beating Lodi on April 4, that the Bulldogs had to be careful to not overlook Franklin.
“Coming up with a victory after a game like Lodi, coming away with a win against a good team like Franklin, is a good result,” he said.
After Franklin tied it up, the Bulldogs turned up the offensive pressure. Tracy kept the ball on Franklin’s side of the field for most of the second half and broke though the Franklin defense for a two more goals to win it.
Taylor Roach scored for Tracy in the first half with an assist from Ghoncheh Azaden, and Mariah Serrato scored with an assist from Roach. Tracy took back the lead after Franklin tied it with a goal from Bolton on an assist from Serrato, and a Courtney Allen goal that was helped by an assist from Bolton.
Tracy’s junior varsity team won on Friday, 2-0, with both goals coming from Kennedy Gray and one assist from Allie Rodriguez. It puts the JV team at 11-0 for the season and 2-0 in the SJAA.
Tracy’s JV team also won its April 4 game at Lodi, 6-2, with three goals for Hunter Wells, two goals and an assist from Daesha Brown, and one goal and two assists from Jenna Wesely.
West Campus 3, Millennium 0
The Millennium soccer team took its first loss of the year Friday, April 6, at West Campus High in Sacramento.
Millennium coach Mario Ron said it was a hard-fought game that required the Falcons to bring their best defense to the field. He credited defender Courtney Briggs and goalie Haley Rockwell with keeping the game under control.
West Campus scored two goals in the first half and one in the second, and Rockwell blocked six shots on goal.
The loss puts Millennium at 9-1-1 for the season.
