The West High varisty boys track and field team has started off with the advantage in the Tri-City Athletic League, claiming a second team win in the TCAL dual meet season.

The Wolf Pack outscored St. Mary’s 85-50 Wednesday at Steve Lopez Stadium after taking a win last week at Tokay High on Wednesday. West’s varsity girls took a 73-62 team loss on Wednesday, and both freshman-sophomore teams beat St. Mary’s, the boys 100-29 and the girls 87-6.

It confirms the varsity boys place as league leader after the win at Tokay. Rain cut the Tokay meet short, with the long jump and triple jump events cancelled because of the weather in all divisions. The varsity boys high-jump was cancelled too, but because the West team was ahead 68-47 the Tokay team conceded the win to West, which puts the boys at 2-0.

West coach T.J. Williams said that the other divisions were close enough that West and Tokay will still plan to hold the long jump and triple jump competition, but the date for that hasn’t been schedule yet.

Top athletes for West on Wednesday included Lorenzo Hughes, who won both the 1600 meters, 4:50, and 3200 meters, 10:45. Eddie Kay won both the 400 meters, 53.37, and 200 meters, 22.52. DeAndre Thompson won the 100 meter dash, 11.16, Elisha Mitchell won the long jump, 22-02, Ernest Turner won the triple jump, 40-04, and Daniel Baratta won the pole vault, 10-00. West also won the 4x100-meter relay, 43.47.

First-place varsity girls for West included Megan Grady in the 100-meter dash, 12.04; Margaret Southards, 300-meter hurdles, 50.31; Summer Flowers, long jump, 14-11.75; Maliyah Shavers, triple jump, 31-10; Kalyn Schmig, high jump, 4-04; Mellisa Villacarte, pole vault, 7-00; and Nina Pritchett, shot put, 25-01. West also won the 4x400-meter relay.

Among the freshman-sophomore boys, Barak Nehoran won the 110-meter hurdles, 18.56, the 300-meter hurdles, 48.01, and the high jump, 4-10. Richard Tran won the 1600 meters, 5:21, the 800 meters, 2:21, and the 3200 meters, 14:00. Kirk Truehill won the 100-meter dash, 11.47, and the long jump, 17-04. Lautaime Alailefaleula won the shot put, 38-09, and discus, 89-04.5. Daniel Haley won the triple jump, 33-09, and Noah Martinez won the pole vault, 8-06. West also won the 4x100-meter relay, 48.38.

West’s freshman-sophomore girls won all of their events. Elise Green won the 800 meters, 2:52.31, the 1600 meters, 6:38, and the 3200 meters, 16:30. Lydia Young won the 100 meters, 13.41, the long jump, 13-07.25, and the triple jump, 31-07. Kimberly Gomez won the 100-meter hurdles, 19.38, and 300-meter hurdles, 1:06.37.
