Four selected for Boys State

Four boys were selected by the local American Legion post to represent Tracy during Boys State at California State University, Sacramento, in June.

The West High School students selected are Christian Guzman, son of Guillermo and Basilia Guzman, and Kory Lupica, son of Mark and Deborah Boss.

Maaz Ahmed, whose parents are Badaruddin and Ishrat Ahmen, and Sean Thaler, son of Phillip and Maureen Sanchez, will represent Tracy High School.

There will be a dinner honoring the delegates and their families April 26, a Thursday, at the American Legion’s Lodi post.

Boys State allows high schoolers to learn more about government and experience what it is like to run legislative sessions.

West High FFA students earn degrees

West High FFA students Megan and Kristina Teese were awarded their State FFA degrees at the conference last week.

The sisters became the fifth and sixth students in the history of the West FFA chapter to receive the State FFA Degree. According to the California Association FFA, less than 3,000 students receive the state degree each year — not quite 5 percent of statewide FFA participants.

Megan worked on a market lamb project, while Kristina had goats, which both students sold at the San Joaquin County Fair. They also had equine ownership projects and equine placement positions in an agriculture job in Tracy.

To receive the award, the Teese sisters had to work more than 500 hours and invest or earn $1,000 with their projects.

They also participated in events for the West High FFA chapter at the community and state levels.
